As one Ontario Junior Hockey League preseason tournament championship is celebrated, another is getting underway.
The OJHL’s Leamington Flyers captured the Collingwood Blues’ third annual Terry Geddes Cottage Cup Showcase in Wasaga Beach Thursday.
Colton Smith scored at 16:17 of overtime to give the Flyers a 2-1 win over the Trenton Golden Hawks in the all-OJHL final.
Gavin Grudner had the other Leamington goal. Corbin Roach scored for Trenton.
Leamington reached the final with another 2-1 overtime win, this time over the defending OJHL and Centennial Cup champion and tournament host Blues.
Trenton defeated the touring Jungadler Mannheim U20 team from Germany 4-1 in the other semifinal.
Also taking part were the OJHL’s Toronto Jr. Canadiens and Buffalo Jr. Sabres and the Powassan Voodoo and Timmins Rock from the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey.
The Niagara Falls Canucks are hosting their first Canucks Junior Classic on the main pad of the Gale Centre in Niagara Falls from Aug. 30 to Sept. 1. The Gale Centre is a state-of-the-art fourplex, which will host the OJHL Governors’ Showcase at the end of September.
The Canucks’ tournament features an all-OJHL field, including the Wellington Dukes, Aurora Tigers, Buffalo Jr. Sabres and the host Canucks.
Friday’s games include the Dukes and Canucks playing at 5 p.m. and Aurora clashing with Buffalo at 7.
