Newmarket Hurricanes advance to the second round after dramatic OT series win

Newmarket opened the scoring late in the first period when Gillen buried his first of the postseason at 15:36, finishing a play set up by Wang and Giorgi to give the Hurricanes a 1–0 lead heading into the intermission.

The Hurricanes doubled their advantage early in the second period as Phillips scored his second of the playoffs at 4:18, converting passes from Harding and Muzzatti. Haliburton County responded quickly on the power play. Larmand cut the lead to 2–1 at 7:29 with Brydges picking up the assist, and just over a minute later Durnin struck again on the man advantage at 8:43, finishing a feed from Gosse and Brydges to tie the game 2–2.

Both teams tightened defensively through the third period, with the Hurricanes holding a strong edge in shots but unable to solve Huskies netminder Edwards again in regulation. Newmarket goaltender Froggett also stood firm when called upon, sending the contest to overtime.

In the extra frame, Bruining delivered the winner at 9:27, lifting Newmarket to the 3–2 overtime victory and the series win to the Hurricanes.

The overtime win advances the Hurricanes to the second round in the OJHL postseason.
