TRENTON FALLS IN OVERTIME AT CENTENNIAL CUP

The Trenton Golden Hawks suffered their first defeat at the Centennial Cup national Jr. A championship in Calgary Friday afternoon.

The Ontario Junior Hockey League champions fell 2-1 to the Kam River FightinWalleye in their second game of the event. The Golden Hawks won in overtime Thursday, 5-4 over Northern Manitoba.

“Not our best effort,” Golden Hawks veteran forward David Fournier told the OJHL.

The Golden Hawks earned a point for the overtime loss, giving them three following the first two games.

Kam River, based in Oliver Paipoonge just west of Thunder Bay, won the Superior International Junior Hockey League championship.

The Golden Hawks outshot the Walleye 26-19.

Cooper Matthews scored for Trenton who trailed 1-0 after the first.

The Golden Hawks have the weekend off before completing preliminary-round play with games against Greater Sudbury Monday and Grand Prairie, the Alberta champs, on Tuesday. Both are 6 p.m. ET starts.

Fournier said his team will use Saturday and Sunday to regroup.

The itinerary includes visiting teammate Dylan Woulds’ family home in Calgary.

The playoffs will be played May 16-18.

The tournament includes 10 teams – the host Calgary Canucks and representatives from the Alberta Junior Hockey League, Ligue de hockey junior AAA du Québec, Ontario Junior Hockey League, Superior International Junior Hockey League, Central Canada Hockey League, Manitoba Junior Hockey League, Maritime Hockey League, Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League and Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League.
