Flyers’ star already named ‘Top Goaltender’ for lowest GAA in league
April 10, 2025, Mississauga, ON – …. Marcus Vandenberg of the Ontario Junior Hockey League’s Leamington Flyers has been voted the OJHL’s Goaltender of the Year for the 2024-25 season, the league announced today.
The award is voted on by OJHL general managers and media representatives who cover the league.
Last month, Vandenberg was announced as the recipient of the OJHL’s Top Goaltender award, which is presented to the OJHL goalie with the lowest goals-against average.
Vandenberg had a 1.48 GAA this season to go with a record of 31-4-0 and a 0.946 save percentage. He recorded six shutouts.
Vandenberg played two seasons in the Ontario Hockey League (Sudbury, Kitchener, Niagara) before signing in Leamington ahead of this season.
“The difference for (between the OHL and OJHL) is that the high-end guys in the OJHL, many of them can play in the OHL and do well,” Vandenberg told the OJHL. “The high-end guys could compete up there. There’s a lot of skill in this league and guys compete hard every night, for sure.”
The 20-year-old from Dorchester, near London, plans to play college hockey next season.
“We are very proud of Marcus for being recognized as the top goaltender in the OJHL,” Leamington Head Coach Dale Mitchell told the OJHL. “I do not say this lightly; he has the best professional tendencies I have seen since I began coaching in Leamington. His dedication and passion for the game are truly refreshing. He has been a major reason for our success as a team.”
Leamington, which finished first in the West Conference during the regular season, is playing the Milton Menace in the third round of the OJHL playoffs. The best-of-seven series resumes in Milton Friday night with the Menace leading two games to one.
Marcus will be honoured along with the other OJHL award recipients at a ceremony during the OJHL Championship Series later this month.
Flyers’ teammate Colton Smith won the OJHL scoring title, the league announced last month.
The OJHL is announcing its 2024-25 award winners throughout the first three rounds of the playoffs.
