Haeden Ellis of the Ontario Junior Hockey League’s Buffalo Jr. Sabres (photo credit – Dan Hickling |Elite Prospects) has confirmed his commitment to join the NCAA Division I Northeastern University Huskies in Boston, Mass beginning with the 2026-27 season.

The 16-year-old committed to the Jr. A Sabres from the Jr. Sabres youth hockey organization this summer. The Buffalo native grew up in the organization. He had nine goals and eight assists in 16 games with the U15 team last season.

“Everyone at the Jr Sabres couldn’t be happier for Haeden on his commitment to Northeastern University,” said Sean Wallace, General Manager and Head Coach of the OJHL Sabres. “His commitment to getting better every day is evident in everything he does. We couldn’t be happier that our OJHL team is back this year and Haeden can take his next step in development with us.”

Haeden was an eighth round pick of the Kitchener Rangers in this year’s Ontario Hockey League U16 draft.

“It’s been a honor to grow up playing, and developing my game since the age of 9 as a Buffalo Jr Sabre,” Ellis told the OJHL. “The teammates and coaches that I have had, pushed me and challenged me every day to be the best player I could be. I’m fortunate to have had great role models to look up to that played for the 20U OJHL team through the years. There have been numerous players that have set a great example for young players like myself to aspire to.”

“And now to be on this team and be able to do the same for the younger players in this organization means a lot. I’m beyond excited for this step in my journey and can’t wait to get the season started.”

Congratulations to Haeden and best of luck in the OJHL and NCAA!

Two Ontario Junior Hockey League graduates have jo

Two Ontario Junior Hockey League graduates have joined the staff of the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins as scouts, it was announced by President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Kyle Dubas.

Matt Lorito and Brandon DeFazio are both Oakville natives.

Lorito, 33, had 78 and 82-point seasons with the now defunct Villanova Knights in the OJHL.

He joins Pittsburgh after a nine-year professional playing career that included stops in the NHL, AHL, KHL, DEL and SHL in Sweden.Lorito suited up in the 2022-23 campaign with Grizzlys Wolfsburg of the DEL, but spent the majority of his career over the course of eight seasons in the AHL with Albany, Grand Rapids, Bridgeport, Toronto, San Diego and Hartford, accumulating 244 points (94G-150A) in 340 career games. His best season came in 2016-17 with Detroit, where he made his NHL debut and won the Calder Cup with the Red Wings’ AHL affiliate, Grand Rapids.

Lorito is a graduate of Brown University, and his primary responsibility will be to scout professional organizations in the Northeast.

DeFazio, 34, split time in the OJHL between Oakville and Milton from 2005-07.

He had a 13-year professional playing career, which included stints in the NHL, AHL, ECHL, the KHL in Russia, Liiga in Finland and the DEL in Germany. He spent the last six seasons playing overseas, and skated in the 2022-23 campaign with Schwenninger of the DEL.

Before his time in Europe, DeFazio enjoyed a seven-year run in North America which culminated in the 2014-15 season with his NHL debut while with the Vancouver Canucks. DeFazio is a graduate of Clarkson University, and his primary responsibility will be to scout amateur players in Ontario.

Former Stouffville Spirit forward and NHLer Will Acton is also on the Penguins scouting staff.

Twenty-year old Brandon Cohen will wear the ‘C’ for the St. Michael’s Buzzers during the 2023-24 OJHL season.

It will be Brandon’s third term with the squad that plays out of St. Michael’s College School on Bathurst Street in Toronto. He finished second in scoring last season with 24 goals, six of them game winners, and 56 points, second only to Giacomo Martino, who has committed to Northeastern University for 2024-25. After a slowish start, Brandon put at least one point on the board in of his 25 of his last 29 regular season games.

Buzzers’ head coach/GM Rich Ricci had this to say about his new captain: “Brandon is our longest-serving player and our last holdover player from the COVID-19 era. Brandon has worked his way through adversity in his early years. He was asked to improve areas of his game and has done so in an admirable way. He is a mature kid who always comes to work. He possesses a heavy, accurate shot and knows where the net is. His defensive game and hockey IQ are elite. I expect him to be dominant this season, receive an NCAA commitment and lead our team to success.”

It’s new to Brandon.

“This is my first season wearing a letter. I finished my minor hockey career playing U18 AAA for the Toronto Jr. Canadiens after being in the Missississauga Rebels organization. I’m looking forward to the challenge and I will have a lot of help from several guys who have had OJHL experience.”

Looking back.

Last season was a tough one for us. We had some setbacks and lots of injuries to key players, including our captain Aidan Shepard. Getting Ryan O’Toole and goalie Christian Trianni helped us but we could not get the consistency we wanted and in the playoff series against the (Wellington) Dukes we were shorthanded and couldn’t get it done in a physical series. We played well in the first game but couldn’t come all the way back. Everything went right in one game, No. 4, where we won 8-0 at home. Overall, it was a crazy series.”
