Game 2 goes Nov. 11 in Cobourg

Lincoln Edwards of the Cobourg Cougars scored three times to lead Team Red East to a 9-3 win over Team Grey East in Game 1 of the Zach Hyman OJHL Prospect Series in Trenton Tuesday night.

Edwards was presented the Red Player of the Game award by OJHL Commissioner Marty Savoy.

Cobourg teammate Zack Gardner and Christian Armstrong of the Wellington Dukes had two goals apiece for Team Red. Kayden Brand of the Markham Royals and Kaden Koutroulides of the Lindsay Muskies had the other goals for Team Red, which held period leads of 4-1 and 6-1.

Edwards, who turned 16 on Sept. 12, had 100 points last season for his hometown Don Mills Flyers U16 team. He was a fifth-round pick of the North Bay Battalion in this year’s Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection.

“As soon as I told (North Bay) I was going to be playing in (the OJHL) for the Cobourg Cougars they were happy with that. They thought it was a really good spot for me. The OJHL is just such a good developmental league for my future.”

“It’s pretty cool to be with this group of guys,” Edwards said during a postgame interview. “You just want to get out there and do all you can do produce offensively and defensively. It’s pretty good to produce for my teammates out there.”

The OJHL offered Edwards the right venue to develop in this season.

“North Bay was really happy with me going to the OJHL.  “As soon as I told them I was going to be playing in it for the Cobourg Cougars they were happy with that. They thought it was a really good spot for me.

“The OJHL is just such a good developmental league for my future.”

Andrew Pacheco (Markham), Jackson Irvine (St. Michael’s Buzzers) and Henry Wang of Cobourg scored for Team Grey.

“I was kind of overlooked, I would say, in my U16 year. It’s nice to have another chance to show scouts what I can do.”

Justin Doak, an undrafted defencemen with the Wellington Dukes, had two assists and was named Grey Player of the Game. The 6-foot-4 native of Kingston is hoping to be exposed to OHL teams during the series, he said in a postgame interview.

“I was kind of overlooked, I would say in my U16 year,” Doak told the OJHL. “It’s nice to have another chance to show scouts what I can do.”
