Evan Breckles of the Ontario Junior Hockey League’s Stouffville Spirit has confirmed his commitment to join the NCAA Division III Concordia Wisconsin Falcons in Mequon, Wisconsin beginning with the 2026-27 season.
The third-year forward received overtures from approximately 20 American and Canadian universities and colleges this season.
The Stouffville resident selected Concordia University Wisconsin from the suitors.
A coach from the Milwaukee-area university of 4,700 students first made contact with Breckles at the Ontario Junior Hockey League’s annual Governors’ Showcase in Niagara Falls, ON last September.
“Right away, they showed the most interest in me,” Breckles said. “They showed that and just how committed they were to finding the best players they can.”
Breckles came away even more impressed after visiting the school in December.
“The setting, right on the water (Lake Michigan) is beautiful,” he said. “The rink is five minutes off campus and I saw how important the culture at the school was to the students.”
Breckles will leave the Spirit and the OJHL this spring with nothing but praise.
The third-year player has 41 points (18 goals/23 assists) in 36 games this season.
“I wish I could do it all again,” he said. “So many great memories, so many friendships made from playing in Stouffville. Honestly, it’s been the best time of my life.”
Breckles brother, Jacob, played for the Spirit, the Cobourg Cougars and Wellington Dukes and later won an NCAA championship at Adrian College in Michigan. Their father, Bob, is a former member of the Spirit staff. He’s a scout with Kingston of the Ontario Hockey League.
“It has been a pleasure watching Evan grow and develop over the last three years,” said Spirit Head Coach TJ Hill. “He has put in a ton of work on and off the ice and has become a very complete player. Very happy for him and well deserved. ”
Breckles has 42 points (19 goals/23 assists) in 37 games this season
The Spirit (33-9-1-0) are ranked 10th – down two spots in spite of winning both their games – in the Canadian Junior Hockey League Top 20 and second in the OJHL’s Power Rankings.
The Spirit has 13 games on its schedule during a hectic February, including seven at the Stouffville Arena. They host Newmarket Thursday and Collingwood on Saturday.
Congratulations to Evan and best of luck in the NCAA!
