Hockey associations and teams across the province are mourning the passing of Craig Spence.

The 22-year-old was killed in a crash on Hwy. 401 near London Tuesday.

The Chatham resident was a member of the Georgetown Raiders of the Ontario Junior Hockey League from 2019-21. The big defenceman scored five goals and added 11 assists in 2019-20.

He was captain of the Jr. C Blenheim Blades this past season.

Craig also played parts of four seasons with his hometown Jr. B team, the Chatham Maroons.

“Craig was a consistent performer and an excellent teammate all the while participating in all three junior leagues in the OHA (OJHL, GOJHL, and PJHL),” the Ontario Hockey Association said in a release.

“Craig capped off his impressive 2023-2024 season capturing the top defenceman award in the Provincial Junior Hockey League’s Stobbs Division. Spence was the runner-up in the division’s scoring race with 74 points in 36 games. He scored 25 goals and assisted on 49.”

Craig was selected by the Mississauga Steelheads in the seventh round of the 2018 Ontario Hockey League U16 draft.

A GoFundMe page made by friends of the family has raised more than $33,000 for the Spences. For more information, go to https://www.gofundme.com/f/craig-spence
